Diet and Hunting Habits

Hydroscales, as their namesake, lives in the water and in the water, there is plenty of food with many different varieties to try. There are many ocean fish they can digest and the poison in some fish can usually be drained out and converted into venom they can use later. But some sea creatures are too poisonous/venomous to eat, so they stay away from those, such as the box jellyfish and blue-ringed octopus.

Regardless, Hydroscales often use the techniques of other sea dwellers, like sharks, swordfish and dolphins to catch their prey.

The older and baby ones, who are too weak to keep up, help gather food by combing underwater near the reefs for crustaceans, such as shrimp, oysters, abalone, crabs and lobsters. And very rarely, a sea urchin or two.

Younger Hydroscales prefer softer food, either eating smaller fishes or crustaceans, like sucking the squishy parts out of oysters or gnawing on an tiny octopus, because their fangs are more sensitive than the older ones. However, with the octopi, there are the slightly careless ones who bit into them and get a face full of ink.

The Hydroscales that are young, fit and in their prime are the ones that chase after the schools of fish that are really fast and work together to get plenty of fish.

Hydroscales that are slightly before (adolescents) or past their prime (middle-aged adults), but still able to fish, stick to the reefs because there are closed spaces and it is easier to corner the fish. Squid and small octopi are caught by them the most.

On land, the Hydroscales are not carnivores, as some may assume, but they're in reality omnivores. Underwater, they pick seaweed, kelp and sea grapes. (Yes, that is a thing.) On land, there are native plants and fruits that they use for consumption, rituals (which I shall explain later) and for medicinal purposes.

Depending where they live, they can get certain fruits, involving, but not limited to... (Get ready for a long long list, keep in mind that not all fruits in this list are found on one island.) *breathes* Bananas, pineapples, coconuts, avocados, mangos, passion fruit, cacao, guavas, starfruit, water apples and bread fruit (It IS a real thing; look it up)

Much like the Polynesian island of Moana, they use the plants for as many uses as possible. They occasionally tend to crops, but more of the medicinal herbs and less of the fruits, because they rely more on the ocean for food.

As I have mentioned in the previous chapter, Freshwater Hydroscales eat more than fish from the river. They also eat small mammals, such as otters, muskrats and beavers, with the occasional frog or salamander and sometimes a water-dwelling bird and their eggs. Sometimes, they leave the water to find roots or berries to eat, occasionally dragging a small rabbit/hare under the water to drown it, but only if they are desperate.

Important Note: When I talk about tending crops, I only mean the Hydroscale Tribe. There are other subcategories that these species fit into that I shall go on in more detail about in my next write-up.
Third one, more to come. Next one: Ceremonies (death, mating, adulthood, gaining leadership)
